UNESCO allocates $900,000 USD for the implementation of projects to boost the global creative economy in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

The UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee met at UNESCO Headquarters from February 7 to 10, 2023. The theme of this meeting was the protection and promotion of the diversity of cultural expressions.

Likewise, this year it was decided to financially support eleven projects, five more than in 2021. This is due to UNESCO’s renewed commitment to consolidate support for the creative and cultural sector, which is still recovering from the impact of COVID-19.

On the other hand, it is also a show of support for UNESCO’s MONDIACULT 2022 Declaration. Because it advocates the strengthening and adaptation of cultural policies to meet current challenges.

These projects cover a wide range of activities, such as amplifying the voice of indigenous filmmakers in Argentina; reviewing Ghana’s national cultural policy; collecting data and statistics on Pakistan’s cultural and creative industries, etc.

Projects supported by UNESCO in 2023

These are some of the projects benefited by UNESCO:

  • Argentina. Broadening the voices of indigenous filmmakers. It is managed by the National Institute of Indigenous Affairs (INAI).
  • Botswana. Creation of a cultural market, led by the NGO of Impact Fund .
  • Chile. Creation of networks and partnerships among cultural agents in Ciudad Sur. It is managed by the Association of Municipalities Ciudad Sur.
  • Ghana. Review of the country’s 2004 cultural policy; this project will be led by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture.
  • Nigeria. Empowering women and youth entrepreneurship through Yoruba Oral Arts in Southeast Nigeria. This project will be led by Osun State University, Osogbo.
