Educating children about climate change stimulates their concern about this issue. In addition, they take into account actions that can help reverse this situation. However, the same is not true for adults. A study showed that it is very difficult to change adults’ attitudes towards climate change.

Research data

According to a study conducted by researchers at North Carolina State University, the education children receive influences parents. The environmental education that children receive fosters parental concern about climate change.

Researchers provided teachers at one school with a curriculum on the climate crisis. A plan to promote intergenerational learning between parents and children. Before showing the curriculum, parents and children answered a survey in order to gauge their levels of concern about climate change.

They divided the students into two groups. One group participated in the curriculum and the other did not. They then evaluated the impact among students and their parents for two years.

They found that parents of students who were part of the study plan showed greater concern about climate change. A greater impact was seen in male and conservative parents. The same people who in the aforementioned survey showed less climate concern.

Another important aspect to note is that girls were more influential in their parents’ attitudes.

The power of education

As you can see, education is a very powerful tool for changing attitudes. Therefore, it is important to implement environmental education in children’s education programs. Since it is a means to raise awareness among parents about the care of the environment. In addition, children learn from an early age about the responsibility we all have towards the environment.
