The advancement of information systems technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) seemed to progress each on its own without ever converging. However, this separation is no longer the norm in the business world.

Although some companies still view IT and OT as separate but equally important disciplines, most have recognized the benefits of combining the two, despite the challenges involved.

Information technology (IT)

It is a critical infrastructure that enables data processing and is considered one of the most mature and advanced technologies. IT systems focus on data and serve as repositories of corporate information that is made available to business applications and users. It covers a wide range of systems related to finance, sales, customer service, payroll, and human resources.

Operational Technology (OT)

Refers to devices and software used in industrial and manufacturing systems. This includes a variety of devices such as sensors, laptops, and smartphones, but it focuses more on real-time testing, control, and monitoring of physical devices. OT systems are often referred to as industrial control systems and are used in automation applications.

Differences between the two technologies

Although both IT and OT are network-based structures that connect several computers, they differ in terms of the operating systems and communication protocols used. IT networks typically run on standard operating systems such as Windows and Linux, while OT networks may use a set of proprietary operating systems that are tailored to the needs of the industry.

Convergence between both technologies

The convergence of IT and OT involves combining these two distinct networks and sharing the information that each collects and distributes. Some of the benefits of convergence are cost reduction by maintaining a single physical network, easy exchange of data between devices, and the ability to act immediately with improved analytics.

Finally, information technology focuses on data processing, while operational technology focuses on the control and monitoring of physical devices in real time.
