In recent times, our world has been experiencing unprecedented environmental challenges that endanger both ecosystems and human well-being.

The year 2023 has been gloomily marked as the warmest year on record in 174 years, portending deplorable weather conditions and extreme weather events globally. In examining the major environmental problems facing us today, four critical issues stand out: climate change, biodiversity loss, plastic pollution and deforestation.

Climate change

Climate change remains one of the most urgent and widely recognized environmental challenges of our time. Greenhouse gas emissions generated by the use of fossil fuels continue to rise, causing an increase in global temperatures and serious consequences such as rising sea levels, melting of the poles and the intensification of extreme weather events such as droughts and cyclones. Despite international agreements that call for action, such as the Dubai Climate Change Summit (COP28), emissions levels persist, hindering efforts to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

Loss of biodiversity

The loss of flora and fauna is accelerating due to human activities, pollution and climate change. Remarkably, between 1970 and 2016, populations of mammals, fish, birds, reptiles and amphibians declined by an average of 68%. The agreement reached at the Montreal Biodiversity Summit to protect 30% of terrestrial and marine areas by 2030 was a major step forward, but challenges remain, such as the impact on indigenous communities living in designated protected areas.

Plastic pollution

Plastic pollution has reached alarming levels, endangering both marine ecosystems and human health. Every second, 200 kilograms of plastic enter our oceans, affecting more than 700 marine species. Microplastics, which are also present in our food and water sources, pose additional threats. Action to reduce plastic use and clean up existing pollution is urgently needed and calls for international cooperation and innovative solutions.

Deforestation

Deforestation rates, especially in regions such as the Amazon, remain alarmingly high despite global commitments to reverse this loss. The destruction of forests not only contributes significantly to CO2 emissions, but also threatens biodiversity and exacerbates climate change. It is heartening to see efforts in countries such as Brazil, where actions have been taken to reduce deforestation, and this gives us hope for sustainable forest conservation.

Despite various commitments made, deforestation rates remain very high, contributing to climate change and biodiversity loss.

These environmental problems are interconnected and underscore the urgent need for a collective approach at local, national and global levels. Tackling climate change, biodiversity loss, plastic pollution and deforestation require bold policy initiatives, technological innovation and changes in human behavior. As we move forward, the success of international agreements depends on tangible actions to protect our planet for both current and future generations. Time is short, and it is time to make decisive decisions.
