Have you ever wondered how the sport you choose can affect your life and, specifically, your longevity? The quest for a longer, healthier life is a goal shared by many, and playing sports on a regular basis can be an important key. However, few know that each sporting discipline offers different benefits and risks. A recent study has explored how various sports practices influence life expectancy, revealing results that could change the way you view physical activity and its role in health.

The connection between sports and life expectancy

A study entitled “Sport and longevity: an observational study of international athletes,” published in GeroScience, analyzed data from more than 95,000 retired athletes from 183 countries and 44 different disciplines. This extensive analysis considered variables such as gender, year of death and country of origin, allowing for a more comprehensive view of how sport impacts longevity. The findings are fascinating and reveal the diversity in the effects of different disciplines. How do different sports impact the longevity of their practitioners and how can we apply this information to our own lives?

Sports with significant benefits

The results show that certain sports can markedly prolong life. In particular, pole vaulting and gymnastics stood out, being associated with an increase in life expectancy of 8.4 and 8.2 years respectively. These sports are not only physically demanding, but also require coordination, flexibility and strength skills. The combination of aerobic and anaerobic capabilities could be the reason for their positive impact. In addition, the discipline and dedication required to excel in these sports encourage a healthy lifestyle, which also contributes to a longer life.

Risks associated with some combat sports

On the other hand, disciplines such as martial arts and sumo wrestling showed a negative relationship with longevity, reducing life expectancy by 5.4 years. This adverse effect could be linked to traumatic injuries and the strict diets athletes must follow, which can be detrimental to long-term health. In addition, the risk of injury in combat sports is inherently higher, which can lead to physical complications that affect quality of life. Interestingly, although boxing and wrestling also have negative connections, their effects are not as pronounced as in martial arts. This suggests that the type of training and physical preparation may play a crucial role in the long-term health of athletes.

Team sports and their mixed results

Team sports, such as cricket and rowing, have shown a positive association with longevity. The social interaction and teamwork in these sports may contribute not only to physical well-being, but also to emotional well-being. However, volleyball presented a surprising negative impact, with a reduction of up to 9.8 years in life expectancy. This phenomenon raises questions about the physical stress to which players are exposed, which could affect their long-term health. The high intensity and competitive nature of volleyball may contribute to injuries that ultimately compromise health.

The racquet sports advantage

Among the most encouraging findings is the positive relationship of racquet sports such as tennis and badminton, which can extend life by 5.7 years for men and 2.8 years for women. These sports appear to offer an ideal balance of physical activity and fun, which could be key to their longevity success. The combination of cardiovascular exercise, coordination, and the opportunity to socialize makes these disciplines attractive to many people. In addition, the less rigorous nature of injuries compared to other sports may be a factor to consider.

Final thoughts

Although the results of this study are preliminary, they suggest that the specific characteristics of each sport discipline may be determinants of longevity. While more research is needed, the benefits of regular exercise are indisputable. The choice of sport may be more than a matter of preference; it may be a decision that directly impacts our quality of life and longevity.
