Services provided by artificial intelligence, such as ChatGPT or Bard, have a negative impact on the environment. Both demand high computational power, which translates into higher energy consumption and increased carbon emissions. However, they can also provide elementary tools to save the planet.
Projects that use AI to help the planet
PrevisAI
This is an application developed by Imazon to predict the next deforestation sites in the Amazon. Although there are other models to predict this problem, they issue an inaccurate and late warning to prevent logging.
PrevisAI solved these problems by using two databases to train an AI-based system. An AI algorithm automatically maps the sectors of the Amazon that are at risk of being deforested. In this way, illegal logging is prevented.
Intelligent agriculture
German company Agvolution developed an AI system that uses data from solar sensors to control the microclimate around crops. This system is capable of measuring soil temperature, humidity and radiation in the field.
The information is analyzed by the artificial intelligence software to provide recommendations on the state of the crops; it also indicates the amount of water needed for crop growth and the recommended amount of fertilizer. This promotes more sustainable agriculture.
Ecolana
Ecolana is a platform that provides information on collection centers that receive recycling materials. It notifies users the location of collection points, their open hours and the type of material they receive in order to generate a sustainable economy.
Artificial intelligence will help the platform identify waste that is suitable for recycling. In this way, users will be able to generate an economic reward. It also promotes a recycling culture to help the planet.
