Women who have left their mark on architecture

For many centuries, women in the domestic sphere were known for their work in maintaining it rather than building it, as only men were considered fit to design and build.

However, some women have been pioneers in the field of architecture, breaking with this perception. Today, on International Women’s Day, we should remember and celebrate the legacy of women architects who have left their mark on history with their contributions.

Examples of buildings constructed by women

One Thousand Museum by Zaha Hadid

Although some critics argued that her designs were unrealistic, this residential structure speaks for itself as a testament to her talent. Located in downtown Miami, the building stands out for its risky and curved design, with an exoskeleton that partially covers the balconies and allows for an open and uncluttered interior. This was one of the last projects Hadid worked on before her passing.

Montevideo building by Francine Houben

This work also stands out in the architectural panorama. With a height of 140 meters, it is the tallest building in the Netherlands. Its distinctive “M” logo adorns the roof and highlights the area’s maritime identity. The complex houses offices, apartments, and commercial spaces, and it stands out for its avant-garde design and suggestive forms.

São Paulo Museum of Art by Lina Bo Bardi

Bo Bardi is known as one of the most important architects of the Brazilian mid-century school. This museum was inaugurated in 1968 and combines brutalist and modernist elements, in particular through the use of red painted concrete pillars.

Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology by Amanda Levete

This low-rise building resembles a dune when viewed from the Tagus River, Lisbon. Opened in 2016, it explores the convergence of contemporary art, architecture, and technology, allowing visitors to walk both above and below the building.

The 21st Museum of Kanazawa by Kazuyo Sejima

This circular museum, which opened in 2004 in Japan, has become a popular tourist spot thanks to its glass walls and innovative design that combines beauty and architectural utility.

Garage Museum by Amale Andraos

This museum is located in Miami and stands out not only as a place to park cars but also as a multifunctional space that houses a children’s play area, a library, and commercial spaces. The façade design represents social, musical, artistic, and landscape interaction and convergence.

Library of Birmingham by Francine Houben

It is a building that stands out for its delicate and unique filigree skin. Framed by the city’s largest public square in the city of Birmingham, England, the building draws on tradition of craftsmanship and offers a sense of unified purpose. Designed with circular spaces interconnected through elevators and escalators, this library demonstrates Houben’s innovative vision for creating a functional and aesthetically appealing architectural environment.

Borisov soccer stadium by Spela Videcnik

This stadium, located in Belarus, combines a visually fragile appearance from the street with an open dome-shaped roof seen from above. With a seating capacity of 13,000, this structure challenges the traditional perception of stadiums and showcases a unique combination of innovation and functionality.
