A company’s organizational culture is the set of principles, beliefs, attitudes and behaviors that characterize it and guide its practices. It defines how employees interact with each other, customers and other stakeholders.

A strong, positive organizational culture can foster employee motivation, productivity and overall business success. Go into detail about what organizational culture entails, the different types that exist and how it can be improved.

What does a company’s organizational culture entail?

A company’s organizational culture reflects its identity and determines the way things are conducted within the organization. It encompasses the mission, vision and core values that influence employee behavior and decision making. It manifests itself in leadership style, communication practices, reward systems, and approach to problem solving. For example, Google is recognized for its innovative and open culture that drives creativity and collaboration among employees.

What are the 4 types of organizational culture?

There are four main types of organizational cultures:

  • Clan culture. This culture is based on collaboration, teamwork and a sense of unity among employees. It functions as a kind of extended family, where leaders act as mentors, and focuses on building relationships and developing employees’ potential.
  • Adhocracy culture. In this type of culture, innovation, risk-taking and adaptability are valued. Organizations with adhocracy cultures are entrepreneurial, creative and are often at the forefront of industry change and disruption.
  • Hierarchical culture. This culture is characterized by stability, structure and a formalized work environment. Decision-making is usually centralized and there is a clear chain of command.
  • Market culture. Companies with a market culture are results-focused and competitive. They prioritize achievement, performance and meeting strategic objectives.

Each type of culture has its advantages and challenges, and understanding which one prevails in a company can provide insight into its functioning and the dynamics among employees.

What can be done to improve organizational culture?

Improving organizational culture requires deliberate efforts by both leaders and employees:

  • Define core values. Establish clear and meaningful core values that resonate with employees and guide their behavior.
  • Lead by example. Leaders must embody the desired cultural traits and set the tone for the entire organization.
  • Encourage open communication. Promote transparent communication channels that encourage feedback, collaboration and the exchange of ideas.
  • Invest in employee development. Provide growth, training and skills development opportunities to enable and empower employees.
  • Recognize and reward positive behaviors. Recognize and celebrate behaviors aligned with the desired culture.
  • Embrace diversity and inclusion. Create an environment where diverse perspectives are valued and respected.

By actively cultivating a positive organizational culture, companies can improve employee satisfaction, attract high-quality talent and achieve higher levels of success. Effective leadership, open communication and a commitment to shared values are key ingredients in fostering a strong and resilient organizational culture.
