An environmental project that seeks to promote more sustainable education in Colombia

At the Colegio Nueva York, (Nueva York School), located in the north of Bogotá, an environmental project is being developed that is having a great impact on the educational community.

This project is part of the Laboratorio Ambiental (Environmental Laboratory) of the Sector Educativo Privado Articulado (Private Education Sector Articulated, SEPA) project and aims to promote a more sustainable and environmentally conscious education. Through entrepreneurship and creativity activities, fifth grade students have found sustainable solutions to environmental problems and are sharing their ideas with the community.

The students’ environmental project

Recently, the Colegio Nueva York students hosted the PYP Exhibition, an entrepreneurship fair that challenged them to solve environmental problems in a sustainable way. For months, the students worked on projects related to solid waste management, conservation of native seeds, and the creation of planet-friendly products, among others. At the fair, young environmental advocates shared their ideas and projects with the educational community, showing the power of creativity and awareness in the search for sustainable solutions.

Some of the projects on display at the fair included pet toys made from fabric scraps, scented candles, baskets made from recycled bottles, and skin creams made from natural ingredients. These products not only demonstrated the students’ creativity but also their commitment to environmental stewardship and the search for more sustainable alternatives.

The importance of environmental education in schools

The PYP Exhibition is just one of several environmental education initiatives being carried out at Colegio Nueva York. The Programa Escolar Ambiental (School Environmental Program, PRAE) is integrated into the curriculum and seeks to generate environmental awareness in students and families through living classrooms. These living classrooms include a nursery of native trees that are planted in wetlands, a garden of pollinating birds, medicinal plants, and a vegetable garden with native seeds.

Teachers Mónica Gaitán and Sandra Espinosa, leaders of the project at Colegio Nueva York, have shared their experiences with other educational institutions at SEPA’s Laboratorio de Educación Ambiental (Environmental Education Laboratory). This laboratory gives them the opportunity to work in networks, exchange knowledge and reflections on how environmental education is being developed in private schools in the city.

The Colegio Nueva York’s environmental project not only evidences the educational institution’s commitment to sustainability but also invites other schools and project management students to spread similar initiatives.
