A PMO provides structure and support to ensure that projects are delivered on time, on budget, and within the set scope.

A PMO or Project Management Office is an entity within a company that is responsible for strengthening and improving project management. The main purpose is to standardize the procedures that the company uses to manage projects. Standardization enables project teams to use safe methods to achieve efficient results.

PMO functions

PMO functions vary by organization and industry. However, in general, its main function is to verify that the processes are followed and that the relevant standards are applied to optimize project efficiency.  Other functions include the following:

  • A PMO controls and guides project planning and scheduling, budget control, monitoring and reporting of project status, risk management, change management, human resources, and issues that arise.
  • It is responsible for managing project resources and solving resource-related conflicts.
  • Creation and updating of project management processes and policies.
  • It determines the best practices, project portfolio management, and engagement with other teams and departments in the company.

Types of PMO

It is responsible for collecting and storing a company’s projects and provides support as needed. It is more of a consulting role and verifies that the teams are using the best practices and have the necessary knowledge. It is also effective in providing advice on how to carry out new projects based on information obtained from previous projects.

Control Project Management Office

It also has a consulting role; however, it has the authority to force teams to follow certain organizational practices. For example, using project management tools or specific methodologies.

Directive Project Management Office

He can be fully in charge of all the projects of a company, performing a high-level managerial control function. It establishes the manager in charge of the projects, who in turn is responsible for reporting to the PMO on the projects. The PMO is responsible for the results of each project.
