The pellet crisis: a global plastic plague endangering the natural environment

The beginning of the year 2024 in Spain has been marked by a serious problem related to the misuse and disposal of plastics.

The indiscriminate dumping of small pieces of plastic known as “pellets” on the beaches of Galicia has resulted in an invasion of polymers that is affecting not only the coasts, but also the marine and terrestrial ecosystem throughout the country. This contamination has generated the urgent need to adopt adequate measures to manage plastic waste, as it is necessary to act quickly to avoid further damage to nature and human health.

The plastic problem is not limited to Spain, but extends globally. Its presence and negative impact can be observed practically everywhere on the planet. José Luis García, head of WWF’s marine program, highlights the importance of urgently addressing this situation, stating that the more they investigate, the more they become aware of the presence and negative impact of plastic on nature and health.

In response to this global crisis, the first international treaty against plastic pollution is expected to be finalized later this year. However, a crucial question arises: is it possible to combat pollution without reducing global plastic production? Sheila Aggarwal-Khan, director of the Industry and Economics division of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), argues that reducing plastic production is essential, especially for polymers that are not recycled properly or that are used in short-lived products and other problematic items.

There is no agreement on reducing plastic production

Although this solution seems obvious, at the last meeting of the intergovernmental committee linked to UNEP, the countries most dependent on oil, the main raw material for plastic, were reluctant to limit production. This disagreement jeopardizes the progress of the treaty and reveals the different positions that exist. These challenges are compounded by the uncertainty of being able to conclude the agreement before the end of 2024, which generates the fear of not being able to resolve this debate.

The problem of plastic pollution has spread worldwide. Appropriate measures are urgently needed to curb this environmental crisis.

The plastic crisis is imminent and requires the collaboration and responsibility of all countries to stop this destructive invasion of the environment. The upcoming official meetings in Canada and South Korea will be key to achieving consensus and establishing innovative measures for plastic waste management. The clock is ticking and it is crucial to reach a comprehensive agreement this coming year to work together to reduce plastic production and ensure a more sustainable future for our planet.
