The number of robots in operation worldwide has reached a record level of around 3.9 million units. This demand is due to several technological innovations.

According to the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), there are five key trends in robotics by 2024.

• Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning. The use of AI in robotics and automation is growing steadily. Generative AI enables the creation of new solutions through learning. This applies to the development of interfaces that allow users to program robots with natural language instead of code. In addition, AI can predict the future condition of robots and perform predictive maintenance, which can save manufacturers large amounts of money.
• Expansion of cobots into new applications. Human-robot collaboration continues to be a growing trend. Advances in sensors, vision technologies, and intelligent gripping systems enable robots to work safely and in real time alongside humans. Cobots are especially useful in tasks that require physical strength, repetitive movements, or in hazardous environments.
• Mobile manipulators. So-called “MoMas” automate material handling tasks in sectors such as logistics and aerospace. These robots combine the mobility of robotic platforms with the ability to manipulate objects. Equipped with sensors and cameras, they can perform inspections, maintenance tasks, and collaborate with human workers.
• Digital twins. Digital twins are virtual replicas used to optimize the performance of physical systems. This approach is increasingly being implemented in factory-integrated robots. Digital twins use real-time operational data to simulate and predict results, helping to reduce costs and improve efficiency.

• Humanoid robots. Humanoid robots designed with two arms and two legs have greater versatility and can easily adapt to work environments intended to be performed by humans. This feature allows them to be easily integrated into existing storage processes and infrastructures.

These are the five trends highlighted by the IFR for 2024. These innovations are expected to further drive the advancement and adoption of robotics in different industries.
