Technology makes various resources available, however, it also shows a growing gender gap.
Nowadays, there are not the same possibilities of access to digital resources. There is no equality in decision making about what kind of technology to develop nor its objectives.
On the other hand, women are exposed to high rates of digital violence; such as cyberbullying and sexual harassment. In addition to this, there is also the recruitment of women for trafficking networks. This influences women to stay away from social networks.
Technology as an Ally in Gender Equality Fight
Despite the above, technology has played a very relevant role in the defense of women’s rights. The involvement of women in online social initiatives has made it possible to build proposals that seek the common welfare of women.
Access to technological resources has been vital in achieving feminist triumphs around the world. For example, #Noesno and #Yosítecreo in Spain or #MeToo in the United States.
These and other social media campaigns highlight the violence suffered by women.and they create spaces to talk about them, learn to identify them and know that they are not alone or isolated events. Likewise, various channels have been created that have made it possible to report this type of practice.
These campaigns have also helped generate social pressure for very significant changes.
What Actions Can Be Implemented?
It would be very useful to create technological tools to report cases of gender violence or discrimination. so that women are protected. However, there is also a need for campaigns to teach women how to use them. Accessibility of use, total anonymity and immediate action in cases of violence must also be improved.
