Autonomous Vehicles of 2023

T11

Prior to the advances made by Volkswagen and Bosch, the American electric vehicle brand Tesla has already ventured into this field. The Autopilot system made it possible for the vehicle to drive on highways without driver intervention.

By the end of 2021, Germany’s Daimler Group won European approval to develop a similar Level 3 autonomous driving device.

Volkswagen’s Autonomous Vehicles

According to its executives, this new technology will be key to the future of the automotive industry. This will be made possible by implementing 360˚ sensing systems and using artificial intelligence.

Cariad, Volkswagen’s affiliated IT company, with the support of Bosch, will be responsible for developing the functionalities of the new technological device. This device will make it possible for the driver to temporarily let go of the steering wheel with an autonomy level of 2.

These devices are built for Volkswagen Group models, however, they will also be available for other manufacturers.

Future Plans

At the same time, they will develop the level 3 system, which could be available on the market soon. Through this system, the vehicle will be able to control the brakes, accelerator and steering by itself; always under the supervision of the driver. The vehicle will also be able to decide on the movements to be made on the road and react to incidents. This system is the most advanced ever created.

However, Volkswagen’s plans for autonomous driving do not end with Level 3. According to the brand’s executives, there are also plans to work on level 4 driving.  This level is already a stage prior to the complete robotization of automobile transportation.
