With the increasing use of technology by young people, it is essential to have a solid digital education that prepares them to live in a globalized and digitized society.

In this new landscape, education and global citizenship take on an even more crucial role. Digital citizens are now required to be competent to access information effectively, actively participate in the creation and use of online content, and have an ethical approach to the use of digital technologies. According to a recent UNESCO report, it is estimated that approximately 79% of 15-24 year olds were using the Internet in 2023, emphasizing the need to integrate digital education into educational programs and empower students to thrive in the digital environment.

The goal of Global Citizenship Education (GCED), a fundamental part of the work carried out by UNESCO in the field of education, seeks not only to provide information and knowledge, but also to form committed and responsible citizens on issues such as sustainable development, human rights and peace. In the digital age, this involves acquiring digital skills and competencies, but also fostering critical, creative and inclusive attitudes towards technology.

Why is global digital citizenship important?

Digital citizenship education focuses on preparing students to meet the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities offered by the digital world. It is essential that students develop skills that enable them to use digital technologies responsibly, understand and analyze online information, collaborate in digital communities, and keep up with technological advances.

In this context, UNESCO has published new guidelines for educators, establishing a comprehensive framework for promoting global citizenship through digital literacy. These guidelines seek to impart students with critical knowledge, analytical skills and a reflective view of the interconnected world in which we live.

In conclusion, digital education is becoming increasingly essential to form competent citizens in our global and interconnected society. Digital and global citizenship teaches us not only to efficiently leverage online information and knowledge, but also to promote values of collaboration, ethics and responsibility in diverse digital communities. Educators play a critical role in empowering students to contribute positively to the development of their community and the world at large.
