The improvement of the teaching profession has been one of the unresolved issues in the educational field for years.

However, the Spanish governor, Pedro Sanchez, is determined to address this challenge in the current legislature. The Minister of Education, Vocational Training, and Sports, Pilar Alegría, assures that this legislature will be the legislature of teachers and that ways will be sought to improve the working conditions and salaries of teachers in Spain.

The Ministry of Education presented a year ago a total of 24 proposals to improve the teaching profession. These proposals include changes and updates in various aspects, such as training, teacher evaluation, and teaching career progression. However, due to the elections and the change of government, these proposals came to a standstill.

One of the first issues to be addressed in the negotiations with the education unions will be incentives and salary improvements for teachers. Although in terms of purchasing power, Spanish teachers have comparatively high salaries at the beginning of their careers, throughout their careers there are hardly any incentives to compensate for their good performance. This is something that the government believes needs to be addressed and ensure that core state funding contributes to improving teachers’ salaries across Spain.

How to incentivize the improvement of teachers’ salaries?

One of the proposed mechanisms is the inclusion of incentives based on teacher performance. This would imply recognizing the good professional development of teachers based on the training they have received, the evaluations they have passed and the positions they have held throughout their careers. In other words, the aim is to establish a system that contemplates the different possibilities of professional growth linked to complementary remuneration.

The goal of the Ministry of Education is to propose to the education unions a negotiation schedule that will allow for the continuity of these proposals and achieve concrete improvements in the teaching profession. In this way, it seeks to value and recognize the work of teachers, encourage their progress, and contribute to raising the quality of education throughout the country.

This is only the beginning of a process that seeks to transform the teaching profession and improve education in Spain. Expectations are high and the opportunity to focus on the demands and needs of teachers, recognizing their importance in the education system and valuing their work, is now gaining momentum. In the light of the proposed reforms, how the negotiations will evolve and what real impact they will have on the practice of teaching in the country remains to be seen.
