Graphology allows us to get to know students better by observing their handwriting in order to guide them better.

The use of technology in education has generated several advantages in the development of education, but it has also generated disadvantages. One of the immediate consequences of technology is the decline or near disappearance of handwriting. This is a consequence of the excessive use of electronic devices. Therefore, it is not a matter of disappearing digital tools but of continuing to take advantage of the traditional didactic resources of education.

Handwriting is linked to neuronal and motor processes; therefore, the way of writing shows the temperament and personality of the individual. This means that the teacher with a basic knowledge of graphology will be able to know his/her students better. By observing the student’s handwriting, it is possible to contrast his/her performance with his/her writing traits in order to better guide him/her.

The importance of graphology today

In general, graphology is highly demanded in various situations such as the detection of certain diseases; the confirmation of the veracity or falsity of signatures in courts of law; in the analysis of the writing traits of a criminal; in the selection of competent personnel for a company, among others.

Specifically in education, handwriting is essential in the field of counseling, given the vast information it provides about a person. It is possible to obtain data through the inclination or verticality of the handwriting, its size, spacing, pressure, rhythm, and speed; the position of the text on the paper, the contrast between the letter of the text and the signature, the specific features that each letter may present.

The information obtained from the above data allows us to know the activity, mental agility, attention, emotion, strength, memory; also the care, hesitancy, shyness, will of the students, etc.

This reflection seeks to make visible the importance of not losing handwriting and to balance the use of technology in education. Why waste the personal knowledge offered by handwriting in education?

Finally, the Universidad Internacional lberoamericana (International Iberoamerican University) (UNIB) offers the Master in Education with a specialty in ICT education.
