Learning any skill takes practice, and this is especially true for learning a new language. If students are at an intermediate level, they should start using the language as much as possible to move towards fluency.
Vocabulary and grammar
The 1,000 most used words in a given language represent the majority of real-life conversations. Once you have reached an intermediate level, you do not have to focus as much as beginners on using new vocabulary. Instead, students should work on reinforcing and memorizing the vocabulary they already know.
Similarly, the grammar found in textbooks is not exactly the same as the grammar used in real life. Learn the basic grammatical structures but focus on the forms in which you hear the actual use of the language.
Immersion
Once a student has a foundation in a language, he or she can begin to actively listen to it. Listening comprehension is a very important skill. Even if they don’t understand everything, they may feel more comfortable with the language.
Practicing comprehension does not have to be in a typical classroom setting. Students can enjoy reading books, watching movies, or listening to music in the foreign language. This gives them the opportunity to experience the language firsthand, rather than reading it in a textbook.
UNIB offers courses for education, specifically for educators who want to assist in language learning. Some of these programs are the Master in Teaching English as a Foreign Language and the Master in Teacher Training for Teachers of Spanish as a Foreign Language.
