Obesity and overweight are public health issues affecting millions of people worldwide. These conditions not only impact physical health but also increase the risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and certain types of cancer. In the search for effective interventions to improve body composition and quality of life for this population, a recent study published in BMJ Open has highlighted the benefits of aquatic aerobic exercises. How can this activity contribute to weight and waist circumference reduction? Below, we present the most relevant findings.

The Impact of Overweight on Health

Excess body weight not only affects physical appearance but also has profound health implications. People with obesity face higher levels of inflammation, metabolic disorders, and a greater likelihood of developing chronic diseases. Additionally, physical limitations and the psychological impact associated with being overweight can make it difficult to adopt healthy habits, such as regular exercise. This is where aquatic aerobic exercises emerge as an accessible and low-impact option to promote positive changes in body composition.

Study Methodology

The study, titled Effects of Water Aerobics on Body Composition in Obesity and Overweight People: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis,” analyzed the results of 10 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that included 286 participants. Researchers assessed key indicators such as body weight (BW), waist circumference (WC), body fat percentage (PBF), and lean mass. Additionally, they used tools like the GRADE system to determine the quality of evidence and ensure the robustness of the results.

Key Findings

The meta-analysis results revealed that aquatic aerobic exercises are highly effective in reducing body weight and waist circumference, two essential indicators of metabolic health. Participants experienced an average weight loss of 2.69 kg after a program of at least 10 weeks, while waist circumference decreased by an average of 2.75 cm, reflecting an improvement in abdominal fat distribution. These effects were more pronounced in women and adults over 45 years old, highlighting the need to tailor interventions based on the characteristics of each group. However, the results related to other indicators, such as body fat percentage and lean mass, were less conclusive due to the limited quality of available evidence.

The benefits of aquatic aerobic exercises are combined with the unique properties of water, such as buoyancy and resistance. These characteristics make the activity low-impact, making it an ideal option for people with physical limitations or joint problems. Additionally, water provides natural resistance that helps tone muscles and burn calories efficiently.

Conclusions

In conclusion, aquatic aerobic exercises represent an effective and accessible tool for improving body composition in people with obesity and overweight. This type of exercise not only helps reduce weight and waist circumference but also offers an inclusive and adaptable approach for different age groups and fitness levels. Although further studies are needed to confirm its impact on other aspects of body composition, current findings support its inclusion in weight management intervention programs.
