The LA28 Organizing Committee has proposed to include five more sports in the Los Angeles Olympics.
The 2028 Olympics will be held in Los Angeles and the LA28 committee has requested the inclusion of additional sports. Those sports are baseball-softball, cricket, flag football (a low-contact version of American football), lacrosse, and squash. This request is still pending approval by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
If this proposal is approved by the IOC Olympic Program Commission, the IOC Executive Board will present this proposal in India. The 141st IOC Session will be held there.
It is important to note that three of these sports have already been part of previous editions of the Olympic Games: baseball-softball in 1992-2008 and 2020, cricket in 1900, and lacrosse in 1904 and 1908. However, in this new edition, these sports will have some changes. For example, the cricket format will be Twenty20, with a limited number of overs. The proposed format for lacrosse is Lacrosse Sixes.
What is the purpose of adding five more sports?
The purpose of the inclusion of the proposed sports is to optimize culture through sports. Since they are important and innovative sports that are played in backyards, schools, communities, stadiums in the United States and around the world. According to LA28 President Casey Wasserman, these sports will bring new athletes, fans, and expand the presence of the games virtually. The latter will make it possible to expand LA28’s mission to offer a unique experience.
The legal regulations of the Olympic Games give the flexibility to revise the Olympic program for each edition of the Games. This is due to the idea of bringing innovation, sustainability, and promoting gender equality.
Baseball-softball, karate, skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing were included in Tokyo 2020. Paris 2024 will include breaking, sport climbing, and surfing. In Milan-Cortina 2026, ski mountaineering will be included.
Finally, the Universidad Internacional Iberoamericana (International Iberoamerican University) (UNIB) offers the Master in Physical Activity: Sports Training and Management.
