Trekking, hiking, and mountaineering are common ecotourism activities. Because, when practiced correctly, these activities focus on the enjoyment of natural places with the least possible impact.

Although these activities focus on walking, there are major differences between them.

Trekking

It is also known as excursion and is not just any kind of nature walk. The trekking is an excursion on foot that lasts more than one day and has a certain level of difficulty. Therefore, it is necessary to have adequate equipment that depends on the length of the tour, the weather, and the difficulty. Trekking boots, poles, and a special backpack are required.

The trekking is usually done on routes in places where it is not possible to get there by any other way than on foot; places far from urban areas and, sometimes, without signposts.

 Hiking

Hiking is a walk in nature that does not last more than one day. Their level of difficulty is low/medium, and they are carried out on marked trails. That is, in places that are well signposted to avoid confusion.

Due to its low level of difficulty, hiking is a sport frequently practiced by families. No previous experience or special equipment is required. It is even possible to hike with a pair of sneakers.

Mountaineering

In mountaineering, it is not the duration that matters but the particularities of the terrain to be covered. Mountaineering is an expedition to the mountains, with technical difficulty and requires a greater physical effort. It does not necessarily imply reaching the top of the mountains. Mountaineering can last a single day, but it is an activity that requires more effort than the other sports mentioned above.

Therefore, if you want to practice trekking and you have no experience, it is recommended to start first with hiking and then go up to a higher level.
