Motivation: a key factor in exercise

D9

Practicing physical exercise has multiple benefits. These include the possibility of preventing and controlling non-communicable diseases, maintaining an adequate body weight, as well as improving mental health and quality of life.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that adults perform moderate aerobic physical activity during the week for 150-300 minutes or intense aerobic physical activity for 75-150 minutes, or both.

Lack of motivation is, however, very common and can lead to rapid abandonment of an activity. However, one of the main barriers people face is a lack of motivation that can cause them to give up or stop being consistent.

Reasons to stay motivated

  • Mental health

Several studies have shown that exercise contributes favorably to the treatment of depression and anxiety. This is why it should be one of the main motivations for exercising.

  • Weight loss or weight control

If the main objective is to control or lose weight, exercise is crucial, alongside a proper diet. Therefore, reaching the finish line will be the perfect motivation.

  •  Health and wellness

Another option to motivate you is to remember that scientific studies have shown that exercise can reduce, delay, or prevent the onset of certain diseases.

  •  Entertainment

Exercising with friends or family can make it more fun and beneficial to mental health. Examples of group activities include walking, jogging, biking, tennis, basketball, or soccer.

The International Iberoamerican University (UNIB) in Puerto Rico offers numerous university programs focused on training professionals in the area of sports. One of the courses offered is the Master in Physical Activity: Sports Training and Management
