From abandoned buses to indestructible greenhouses

M1

A Canadian citizen, Doni Rae Franklin, had the brilliant idea of turning abandoned buses into greenhouses.

Greenhouses are used to extend the growing season and protect crops when climatic conditions are not favorable,; for example, in very cold seasons. On the other hand, they require large investments depending on the type of material used to build them.

The most commonly used material is flexible polyethylene plastic due to its low cost.  However, it is a material that does not withstand strong winds and, therefore, must be changed every two years.

Greenhouse buses

School buses are made of very resistant materials.  Additionally, these buses can be purchased at very affordable costs.

To turn a bus into a greenhouse, Doni removes the seats and cuts off the roof; in place of the roof, he places polyethylene plastic. The roof is recycled to make planter boxes; these boxes last longer than traditional wooden boxes as the wood rots easily.

Another advantage of this type of greenhouse is that, when the weather is very hot, the windows are opened to cool the environment.

Moreover, one of Doni’s greenhouse buses is still in operation; this allows him to offer his fresh produce to the market. It is a good way to take advantage of the crops and sell fresh vegetables to customers.

Offering his services

Doni points out that he is ready to offer his help to create more greenhouse buses. It does not require a large investment to convert a bus into a greenhouse.

In addition, he believes that greenhouse buses are the best option for people looking to grow their own food; it can also be a great alternative to start a small business.

On the other hand, putting abandoned buses to good use has a great impact on the environment. Abandoned buses are a source of environmental contamination and intoxication. Heavy materials such as chromium and lead are the pollutants.

By reusing and making the most of the things you have, you contribute greatly to the environment.
