Aquatic high-intensity interval training (AHIIT) has become a popular technique for improving physical capacity in people with chronic conditions.
New research published in the British Medical Journal of Open Sport & Exercise Medicine, Aquatic high-intensity interval training (HIIT) may be similarly effective to land-based HIIT in improving exercise capacity in people with chronic conditions: a systematic review and meta-analysis, suggests that aquatic HIIT (AHIIT) may be similarly effective to land-based HIIT in improving exercise capacity in these individuals. According to this study, AHIIT training is a suitable alternative for people who are unable to exercise on land due to their health conditions.
Results of the AHIIT study
The study examined the effects of AHIIT training on exercise capacity in adults with various chronic conditions, such as musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, metabolic, and neurological. Eighteen studies with a total of 868 participants were included in the analysis. Among the most salient findings of the study, high adherence to AHIIT was found, with rates ranging from 84% to 100% of participants following the training program. In addition, we found a moderate beneficial effect on exercise capacity compared to a non-exercising control group, a similar effect to land-based HIIT training and a small effect compared to aquatic moderate-intensity continuous training (AMICT).
These results demonstrate that AHIIT may be a viable option for people with chronic conditions. However, due to the scope of the chronic conditions addressed in the study, it is recommended that interested individuals consult health professionals before initiating any exercise program.
These findings provide important information for professionals, educators, and students in the field of sport and rehabilitation by highlighting the importance of considering alternative training methods that can be adapted to individual health limitations.
