Are you a teacher or an education student? Discover the surprising reality facing teachers in Spain.

According to a recent report entitled “El profesorado en España 2023” (Teachers in Spain 2023), conducted by the Fundación SM, reveals that two out of five teachers experience burnout, anxiety, and depression. Learn more about this troubling situation and how it affects educators!

What challenges do teachers face today?

Stress, burnout syndrome, and lack of work motivation are just some of the challenges faced by workers in the teaching profession. The study delves into teacher malaise and the factors behind this situation. It also provides relevant information about the state of mind of educators and how it has changed over the years. The report highlights that one in three teachers have experienced a lack of enthusiasm during their career, while two out of five have experienced burnout, anxiety, and depression.

One of the worrying indicators revealed by the report is that the most experienced teachers are the ones who show the greatest symptoms of discomfort. These teachers have long been exposed to emotionally demanding situations, such as being bullied or verbally insulted by students, dealing with excessive demands from families, adapting classes for students with special needs, and maintaining discipline in the classroom. These circumstances generate high levels of stress and lead to a decrease in interest and satisfaction in their teaching work.

What is the reason for the lack of enthusiasm of the teaching staff?

The state of mind of educators has also experienced a worrisome deterioration in the last fifteen years. While in 2008, 60% of teachers said they tried despite the problems and were enthusiastic about their work, today only 38% say they live their work with commitment and enthusiasm. This lack of enthusiasm is attributed to various causes, such as confusion about the demands of the profession, difficulties in meeting the schedule, and arousing the interest of students. Addressing these challenges is essential to promote a more positive work environment that motivates teachers.

What does society think about teachers?

The opinion and perception of society towards teachers is another relevant aspect that can influence the choice of this profession. Surprisingly, the report reveals that there has been a significant decrease in the positive valuation of teachers by society. Fifteen years ago, 81% of society expressed a positive evaluation of teachers, while today only 22% do so. In addition, there are significant differences between public and private or subsidized centers, where greater recognition could be perceived. These figures highlight the importance of recognizing and valuing the work of teachers to motivate and encourage those interested in entering this fundamental profession.

The results of this study are a wake-up call to reflect on the conditions in which teachers in Spain carry out their work and to take measures to improve the reality of the teaching profession. It is essential to promote a conducive work environment that fosters educators’ satisfaction and emotional well-being.
