Cybercriminals use phishing to impersonate company employees. They use text messages and fake websites as a means to reach users. In this way, they manage to obtain relevant data such as credit card numbers and passwords.
In recent days, for example, it has been reported that hackers are trying to access Bancolombia accounts through text messages or e-mails. They contact users with news of an alleged blocking of their accounts and direct them to fake links.
“Your account presented a block, so we decided to suspend it. (…) You have 48 hours or your access will be definitively denied. To unblock, enter the link we have provided (…) and fill out the form correctly.”
Recommendations to avoid becoming a victim of phishing
- Do not respond to e-mails related to alleged account blocking and invitations to access links to fake websites.
- Bancolombia and its allies (American Express, MasterCard, and Visa) never ask for personal information, passwords, or security codes over the phone.
- To prevent information theft, it is necessary to update the operating system of the devices. An antivirus should be activated. Do not open emails of dubious origin. You should also avoid surfing on insecure pages.
- If you are notified with the alleged blockage, it is necessary to report it immediately.
Thus, phishing is the simplest form of cyber attack and, at the same time, the most dangerous and effective. Because this type of scam does not require sophisticated technical knowledge.
