What causes mirror writing?

Mirror writing is writing letters and numbers as they are reflected in the mirror.

This phenomenon is more common among left-handed people and in languages that are written from right to left. It is also frequent in children who are beginning to read and write.

There are several reasons that trigger it:

  • Start writing the numbers without having the image of the numbers fixed.
  • Not perceiving clearly whether a number is oriented to the right or to the left.
  • The process of acquiring a developing body schema and mastery of laterality is in development.
  • Suffering from lack of attention or low visual discrimination.

Similarly, there are a number of reasons for the appearance of mirror writing:

  • Laterality problems at a time in development when children show a preference for the use of one hand or the other.
  • Difficulties in visual perception if the system is not developed correctly to perceive the symmetry of letters and spatial orientation fails.

To correct this phenomenon, the following activities are proposed:

  • Non-graphic exercises: relaxation activities, psychomotor skills, visual perception, visual-motor coordination, spatial-temporal orientation, and attention.
  • Graphic exercises: tasks involving straight lines, curved lines, broken lines, wavy lines, large and small loops, right-hand turns, and drawing.

The International Iberoamerican University (UNIB) of Puerto Rico offers a wide variety of university programs focused on training professionals in the area of teacher training. One of the programs that they offer is the Master in Education with a specialization in the Organization and Management of Education Centers
