Project Management and Creativity: Lessons of the Professor Yini Airet Miró

Yini-Miro

FUNIBER recently hosted the webinar “Project Management and Creativity,” which addressed the application of creativity as a key competence in professional and educational contexts, promoting solutions to problems in project management.

The webinar was presented by Yini Airet Miró, an architect with a master’s degree and doctorate in projects. The researcher offered several details regarding the integration of creativity in project management, which we summarize below.

Everyone Has a Creative Capacity, but It Is Necessary to Develop It

The researcher states the following: “We all have creative capacity; we all have this instinct to create, and the only thing that differentiates us is the ability to develop it and maintain it over time.”

Creativity is a skill that begins in childhood and can be cultivated through play and imagination. The speaker emphasizes the importance of the environment as a promoter of creativity and mentions three elements, which are diversity, collaboration, and psychological safety:  “It has to do with the security we feel when it comes to being able to express ourselves and propose and communicate ideas that can be turned into something creative.”

Creativity is an Important Skill for Project Managers

A project manager is the one who leads the team to achieve the objectives, and to do so requires technical skills, people skills, and knowledge of the environment.

The International Project Management Association (IPMA) includes creativity (referred to as “inventiveness” or “applied creativity”) in version 4.0 of its project management competency framework. To this end, the project manager can encourage the use of creative techniques, promote open and creative workspaces, and adopt a holistic approach to decision-making, among other actions.

There Are Three Streams of Creativity in the Field of Projects

The specialist distinguishes three complementary approaches:

1. Creative Project Management
   – Focuses on the manager’s use of creative techniques, such as the application of design thinking to solve complex problems.

2. Creativity Management
   – Aims to manage the creative process and the team.
   – It includes fostering psychological safety and collaboration.

3. Creative Project Management
-Applies the principles of project management in creative industries, such as film, music, advertising, or design.

AI Can Help Boost Creativity

Artificial Intelligence is very useful in the area of projects. From generating templates to predicting budget variances, these technologies offer solutions that are transforming the way projects are led and executed. Webinar attendees asked questions about how AI can help or negatively affect this field. “It is a tool that allows us to enhance creativity,” says the teacher.
